Christie's said Manansala's "Tiangge" is "an extremely rare, large-format painting" that has belonged to the same distinguished private collection for the past 15 years."

"Using simple colors and a blend of stylization and realism, Sanyu utilized the Western medium of oil and canvas to capture a sense of Chinese aesthetics in his paintings of flowers. "Pink Chrysanthemums in a Basket," with its unique vertical composition and delicately etched details, showcases the artist’s dedication to achieving a refined elegance in his work," it added.

Christie’s said it continues to be the market leader for Sanyu following the auction records set by Sanyu’s "Five Nudes" and "White Chrysanthemum in a Blue and White Jardiniere."
