Writer: Veronica PulumbaritVeronica Pulumbarit

Leon Gallery will hold on June 20 a mid-year auction of spectacular art pieces, including "Goddesses," a 1974 collaboration of three artists -- Ang Kiukok, Mauro Malang Santos, and Hugo Yonzon Jr.

"Goddesses," with a starting bid of P20 million, was commissioned by Pablo Bustamante Jr., the country's publishing patriarch.

His son, Pablo Bustamante III, relates that in 1974, the Philippines was abuzz with Miss Universe fever. The pageant was held at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila on July 21, 1974. It was the first time for the international pageant to be held in an Asian country.

Pablo III recounts that his father invited the three artists to their home for friendly games of poker. Pablo Jr. then asked the artists to paint a mural for a large blank wall in their newly renovated house.

He gave each artist a piece of plywood and they worked on their paintings during poker breaks.

Aside from Leon Gallery says aside from "Goddesses," the highlight of the Spectacular auction, the other paintings to watch out for are the "re-imaginings of mothers and daughters, bathing beauties, country lasses, and modern women..."
